The tasks a Library Clerk is expected to perform include:
Compiling records, sorting and shelving books
Issuing and receiving library materials such as books, periodicals, films, newspapers, etc
Recording data and due dates on cards by hand or via a stamping machine to issue books to patrons
Inspecting returned books for damage, verifying the due date, computing and receiving overdue fines
Reviewing records to compile a list of overdue books and issuing notices to borrowers
Sorting books, publications and other items according to the classification code and returning them to shelves, files or other designated storage areas
Locating books and publications for patrons
Issuing the borrower’s identification card according to established procedures
Filing cards in catalogue drawers according to the prescribed system
Repairing books using mending tape, paste and a brush
Answering inquiries on the telephone or in-person and referring persons requiring professional assistance to the Librarian
Typing material cards, issuing cards and duty schedules
